Top 10 Things to Know Before Your Viet Sails Cruise

After hosting thousands of travelers in Viet Sails Cruise, we’ve identified the 10 things travelers always wish they knew before boarding a plane. From practical logistics to helpful tips, here’s everything you need to travel with confidence.

1. Book early — Especially for Bai Tu Long Bay

Viet Sails operates small boutique ships (10 and 14 cabins). During peak season (October to April), cabins on Bai Tu Long Bay often sell out 6–8 weeks in advance.

The Family Ocean View and Executive cabins on the upper deck are often booked the fastest, so booking 2–3 months in advance will give you the best rates and options.

✅ Booking directly at vietsails.com guarantees:

  • Best price
  • Priority cabin selection
  • Direct support from our team

2. Know your check-in and boarding times

  • Check-in at port: 11:30 AM
  • Boarding & welcome briefing: 12:30 PM
  • Cruise departure: 12:30 PM
  • Return to Hanoi: ~2:30 PM

Our trip from Hanoi Old Quarter to Bai Tu Long Bay port takes 2.5–3 hours. Our shuttle bus departs from 8:00–8:15 AM.

3. Pack light and smart

For a smooth trip to Bai Tu Long Bay, you can bring:

  • 3–4 breathable tops
  • 2 shorts + 1 pair of pants
  • 1–2 swimsuits
  • Light jacket for the evening
  • Flip-flops + water shoes + sneakers
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+, hat, sunglasses
  • Passport (required at check-in)
  • Medicine in original packaging
  • Waterproof phone bag + power bank

Viet Sails provides towels, hairdryers, bottled water, and all kayaking equipment.

4. Set realistic expectations

Viet Sails offers an intimate boutique experience — not a party cruise.

Expect:

✅ Quiet anchorage

✅ Starry nights

✅ Slow pace of life

✅ Genuine Vietnamese hospitality

In Viet Sails Cruise, these are things that are not included: loud music, large swimming pool, water slides or high-speed WiFi. The loudest sound you will hear is the waves of Bai Tu Long Bay, not the noise of Ha Long Bay.

5. Cuisine will surprise you

Cuisine is always ranked in the top 3 highlights of Bai Tu Long Bay Cruise.

Fresh seafood, vegetables bought from the market and a menu with many dishes prepared according to Vietnamese culinary traditions.

All dietary requirements (vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, halal) are met with advance notice. Please let us know in advance if you have any dietary requirements.

6. Activities of your choice

  • You can join or skip any of the following activities:
  • Kayaking in Cap La
  • Thien Canh Son Cave (or Thay Cave in the 3 days 2 nights itinerary)
  • Vung Vieng Fishing Village
  • Cooking Class
  • Night Squid Fishing

No rush. Want to nap instead of exploring the cave? Go ahead. Want to stargaze instead of squid fishing? Perfect.

7. Travel responsibly

Viet Sails reduces over 15,000 plastic bottles/year thanks to reusable glass bottles in the cabin. We encourage our guests to:

  • Avoid single-use plastics
  • Never touch the caves
  • Respect local families when visiting the fishing village

When sailing with Viet Sails Cruises, your cooperation will protect the pristine nature of Bai Tu Long Bay.

8. Capture the best photography moments

Best times to take photos on a Bai Tu Long Bay cruise:

  • Dawn: 5:45–7:30 am (fog and reflections)
  • Golden hour: 4:30–6:30 pm
  • Blue hour: 6:30–7:15 pm
  • Night: stargazing without light pollution

To capture the best photograph, you should bring: a smartphone with a good camera, a waterproof bag, spare batteries, or a mirrorless camera with a 24–70mm lens.

9. Limited WiFi is a detox

WiFi is only available in public areas and is good for texting, not streaming or video calling. Many travelers say this helps them feel more present, because they can watch the sunset instead of filming, or talk with others instead of sending messages.

If you want to have some time of your own, download books, music, and maps before you set off.

10. The crew makes the experience

Our captain, crew, chef and housekeeping team have decades of experience navigating Bai Tu Long Bay. Because of our small size, they remember names and preferences and make every guest feel at home.

Note: Tipping is optional but greatly appreciated.

Book early – pack light – set the right expectations. Get ready to disconnect, enjoy fresh seafood, kayak through hidden lagoons, and let the talented hands of Viet Sails handle every detail. The enchanted sunrises, the conversations between strangers that turn into friendships, the moments when you forget about your phone. These things come naturally when you are present.
